Eco Friendly Parenting – Raising Environmentally Conscious Kids

Raising environmentally conscious kids isn’t a choice anymore; it’s a need. With climate change accelerating at an alarming rate, it is imperative that the carbon footprint be controlled— if not lessened.

Many Gen Z and Millennial parents are now actively raising kids that are conscious of the environment. By utilizing modern eco-friendly materials and machinery in their daily life, they are setting a stellar example for their kids.

However, teaching kids about climate change doesn’t mean you have to drive a hybrid or run your home on solar panels. The basic idea is to educate toddlers and kids about being more mindful about the earth and their surroundings. So how can parents do that?

Encourage Them to Love Nature

Whether it’s spending time in nature, watching shows about them or even celebrating Earth Day, foster the love of nature in your kids.

It’s best to start when they are young. Whenever you plan a family outing, prioritize nature sites over closed malls and arcades. A picnic at a nice hill park, a stroll by the beach or even visiting animal sanctuaries is a great way to teach them about the wonders of nature.

Teach Them The 3-R’s – Reuse, Recycle and Reduce

Pack your toddler’s favorite lunch in a reusable lunch box instead of plastic baggies, and choose paper bags over polythene ones. You can even encourage your kids to choose items like bamboo toothbrushes, shampoo bars and wooden toys instead of the mass produced generic ones.

Helping your toddler to learn about the three R’s will ensure that they grow up to be teenagers and adults who value the environment and are aware of the human impact on it.

Eco-Friendly Parent and Toddler Activities

Toddler-Parent quality time is one of the best ways to educate your kids. Not only will you be leading by example, but it will also give them a safe space to ask their questions.

You and your toddler can start an organic garden or planter by using kitchen scraps. You can even encourage healthy activities like bicycle or tricycle riding in a green playground or planning no-waste cooking activities.

Practice a Reward System

Conditioning is a great way to inculcate desired behavior in toddlers. Reward them when they perform an environmentally friendly act. For example, if your toddler picks up their trash at the beach, you can reward them with positive words or an adorable wooden toy.

Not only will they be encouraged to perform such actions again, but you’ll be raising an eco-conscious toddler who may just make a difference in the world!

As parents, it’s our job to hone and inculcate the best skills in our kids. Currently, the best thing we can do is help today’s toddlers develop responsibility and awareness about better life choices. For more parenting advice, head onto 1st Birthday Gifts!
